Volunteering is more than lending a helping hand; it’s a way to discover meaning and connect with those in our community who need some extra support. Each year, over 900 volunteers at Meals on Wheels of the Greater Lehigh Valley (MOWGLV) make a positive impact on the lives of homebound seniors and adults with disabilities. It’s a true calling, one that isn’t taken lightly by our devoted volunteer, Steve, whose journey to find his purpose began after his first visit to MOWGLV.
When asked what led him to MOWGLV, Steve starts his story by mentioning his mother. Growing up and watching her struggle with a neuromuscular disease, it instilled in him how vulnerable life is at an early age. After he married and had a successful career in the shoe industry, Steve found himself seeking something more. He would often say to his wife, “I’m doing well for me, but I’m not doing anything for other people.” That longing for a purpose continued to linger with Steve as he switched careers, but after the sudden passing of his wife in 2024, that search deepened.
Steve knew he needed to find that missing piece that he’s always been searching for. When Steve asked one of his friends if he could volunteer at his caregiving agency, his friend mentioned that he was on the Board of Directors for MOWGLV and suggested Steve give volunteering with them a chance.
The two of them went together so Steve could get a behind-the-scenes look at all the work we do here at MOWGLV, and from that day on, he knew this was what he had been searching for.
Although he initially volunteered two days a week, he quickly increased his commitment to five days after recognizing the importance of the work. To Steve, this is more than a way to spend his time; it’s a deep commitment to caring for our friends and neighbors.
Volunteers may be the only people our clients see every day. Steve’s delivery visits are an opportunity to talk with clients, deliver a delicious meal, and put a smile on their faces.
Just as much as our clients look forward to visits from our volunteers, it gives Steve a deep sense of fulfillment to know he’s finally found his calling in making a difference. “I found it,” he said. “I’m so grateful I found it, and I look forward to doing it for a long, long time.”
Steve is just one of the many volunteers who enter our doors and change lives every day. You, too, could help create meaningful change in the lives of our neighbors in need. Visit MOWGLV.org/get-involved to make a difference today.
