While many of us tend to bulk at the thought of going to the grocery store every week, one Meals on Wheels of the Greater Lehigh Valley volunteers takes pleasure in this task. For the past four years, Ruth Davis has been one of MOWGLV’s volunteer grocery shoppers. Ruth enjoys shopping for herself, and when she heard of the opportunity to be a grocery shopper for homebound seniors, she knew that it would be the perfect volunteer job for her!

Ruth recalls that the first MOWGLV client that she was assigned to shop for was very particular in the types of products that she ordered. Ruth was up for the challenge! Her attention to detail and passion for helping others earned Ruth a big smile from this “specific” client. The client was so happy with how Ruth treated her shopping, that she went on to shop for the client for several years.

During hectic weeks of the MOWGLV grocery shopping, Ruth would sometimes shop for five clients in one week! Ruth would not complain because she knew that these clients needed service and just couldn’t do it themselves. “These clients never get to go to the store anymore. I appreciate the opportunity to be able to be able to help them”. Thankfully, Ruth is now only managing a shopping load of two clients per week. Her easy-going and jovial personality is infectious to those around her. Ruth treats her clients with respect and takes the time to search for the exact items that her clients need. She fondly recalls that one of her clients would give her pictures of certain items they wanted so that Ruth would know which product to buy.

While some orders can be a little challenging, Ruth finds them to be rather fun! “It is an incredibly rewarding experience. All of the clients are so grateful to be able to receive the groceries that they need”.

Thank you, Ruth, for your kindness and compassion to all of your clients!
