Meals on Wheels of the Greater Lehigh Valley (MOWGLV) client, Lisa*, has been stuck in her house for over a year for fear of catching COVID-19. She has underlying respiratory issues of asthmatic bronchitis and emphysema and felt that if she caught the virus she “would probably not make it”. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, contact with anyone has been extremely limited. She has not seen family, friends or even her doctors in over a year.

What kept Lisa going throughout this pandemic (besides her two sassy cats), is the daily visit from Meals on Wheels volunteers. The hot meal delivered to her home by a friendly face gave Lisa hope — even on her darkest days.

In March of 2021, Meals on Wheels of the Greater Lehigh Valley teamed up with the Allentown Health Bureau and the Allentown EMS to start providing the COVID-19 vaccine to MOWGLV clients in the comfort of their own homes.

“It is very important to me to be able to get this vaccine in my home, since I haven’t been out of my house in over a year,” Lisa stated.  Lisa was fortunate to receive her first vaccine in April 2021. With the vaccines she says “I feel safer now to go out. There is some protection behind me and hope that if I were to get the virus, there is hope that I wouldn’t die”.

She is looking forward to being fully vaccinated so that she can visit her family again. She has two grandchildren that she has not been able to physically see since the start of the pandemic. She is looking forward to giving them hugs.
